Canton, MA (RestaurantNews.com) Dunkin’ Donuts, America’s all-day, everyday stop for coffee and baked goods, is expanding its all-day menu options by serving up four new bakery sandwiches. Dunkin’ Donuts’ new Ham & Cheese Bakery Sandwichfeatures Black Forest ham, white cheddar cheese and Creamy Dijon sauce on a French roll, while the newTurkey, Cheddar & Bacon Bakery Sandwich features turkey, white cheddar cheese, bacon and Ancho Chipotle sauce on a French roll. Guests can also enjoy Chicken Salad and Tuna Salad Bakery Sandwiches, featuring chicken salad or tuna salad on a bagel. All bakery sandwiches are served oven-toasted and made-to-order on a French roll, bagel, or croissant.

Available beginning today at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide, the new sandwich choices are permanent additions to Dunkin’ Donuts’ variety of Bakery Sandwiches to keep you running any time of day. This includes Dunkin’ Donuts’ Texas Toast Grilled Cheese Sandwich, introduced in December. The Texas Toast Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a hot and hearty oven-toasted sandwich featuring two slices of American cheese and one slice of white cheddar cheese melted between two pieces of thick-cut Texas Toast.

“As people find themselves busier than ever, they are snacking more frequently throughout a clockless day,” said John Costello, Chief Global Marketing and Innovation Officer at Dunkin’ Brands. “The addition of Bakery Sandwiches to Dunkin’ Donuts’ all-day menu reflects our commitment to meeting our guests’ changing eating habits and expectations for more fast and satisfying menu items that can be enjoyed any time of day.”

Here are ten superfoods (in no particular order):

Chocolate: An ounce of dark chocolate a day can do the body good. Note: the darker the chocolate, the more nutrients you’ll get. Dark chocolate boasts powerful antioxidants, which has been shown to help reduce inflammation and help lower blood pressure.

Blueberries: Low calories, low carb and high in fiber, blueberries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C and anthocyanidins.

Almonds: Almonds boast heart-healthy unsaturated fats, protein and the antioxidant vitamin E. Plus, they’re a good source of fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, phosphorus and copper. To avoid sodium, go for unsalted raw or blanched varieties.

Quinoa: This perfect protein contains 15 percent of your daily dose of iron and many energy-producing B-vitamins.

Sweet Potatoes: One medium sweet potato contains more than 400 percent of your daily dose of beta-carotene (the antioxidant form of vitamin A) and the antioxidant lycopene. It’s also a good source of vitamin C, fiber and heart-healthy potassium.

Greek Yogurt: This hunger buster offers twice the hunger-fighting protein per ounce than traditional yogurt.

Beans: This diet staple is a great source of protein, carbohydrates and fiber.

Eggs: The incredible egg provides close to 100 percent of your required protein building blocks.

Salmon: This fatty fish is brimming with omega-3 fats (the good kind), which help ward off high blood pressure, sudden-death heart attacks, Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis.

Broccoli: This vegetable has been known to reduce the risk of cancer. And to boot, it is packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin A.

MIAMI, Fla. — Consumers who crave a Whopper but dislike the drive to their local Burger King location can now get their wish. The fast-food giant is testing home delivery services at some Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., stores in an effort to boost sales.

By Jan. 23, Burger King Holdings Inc. will be testing the concept at 16 locations, according to Bloomberg. Deliveries come with a surcharge of $2, and customers must make a minimum order of $8 to $10, depending on the market, the company’s website states. It is unknown if Burger King plans to expand home delivery nationwide.

Customers can place orders via phone or online. However, Burger King does not deliver fountain drinks, milkshakes, coffee or breakfast foods.

“We are currently testing the service to bring this convenience to the U.S.,” spokeswoman Kristen Hauser told the news outlet.

Although Burger King home delivery is new to the United States, the quick-service restaurant chain already has such programs in Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, Columbia and Peru, according to media reports.

Burger King is owned by New York private-equity firm, 3G Capital Inc.

From Nation’s Restaurant News:

Fazoli’s rebuilding project of the past several years has come to fruition, and the brand expects to end the year with its 18th consecutive month of positive same-store sales growth, chief executive Carl Howard said.

Howard told Nation’s Restaurant News during a tour of the brand’s new prototype in its headquarters city of Lexington, Ky., that November’s 6.6-percent increase in same-store sales was the 220-unit quick-service Italian chain’s best November in more than a decade, and that sales in December were trending even higher.

The company credits its new “Expand Your Taste” menu and its new prototype design — in place at all 125 company-owned restaurants and in several franchise markets — with driving results. Updated Fazoli’s locations have more contemporary décor to match fast-casual service upgrades, like food runners, real plateware and silverware, and greater customization available for the chain’s baked pastas.

View a slideshow of Fazoli’s new prototype

The changes have resulted in same-store sales increases running 6 percent to 10 percent above gains elsewhere in Fazoli’s system, Howard said.

The brand will continue to strive for upgrades with the launch of a new customer service initiative that rolls out systemwide on April 9, 2012. The program includes more training for cashiers so they can guide customers through the entire expanded menu and explain dishes without having to turn to the menu board, and all managers will be moved to the dining rooms to deliver bread sticks and visit more tables.

Chicago will be the next market to see Starbucks locations selling beer and wine and expanded food offerings, the company said Tuesday.

Alan Hilowitz, director of corporate communications for Starbucks Corp., said five to seven locations — both new and existing — are scheduled to open or be remodeled in Chicago before the end of 2012 with the beer-and-wine options and new design elements.

The addition of alcohol is something the coffeehouse giant has been testing for about two years in its hometown of Seattle and Portland, Ore.

Currently, six Starbucks outlets offer beer and wine as well as various small plate options like almonds, bread with olive oil dip and salumi plates designed to accompany such beverages.

The goal was to explore ways to build sales later in the day, Hilowitz said. So far, units testing the format have shown double-digit same-store-sales increases after 4 p.m.

In Chicago, the format will no longer be considered in test, although Hilowitz said the company will continue to refine both menu offerings and the design of such locations.

“This is definitely not something we’re bringing to all new stores across the country; it will depend on the neighborhood,” he said. “It has to be right for the specific store.”

Hilowitz said the goal is to offer customers another occasion to visit Starbucks later in the evening for something other than coffee and cake pops.

“We want it to be a transitional place between work and home where people can stop for coffee in the morning, but where friends can stop in later and finish their day with a beer or a glass of wine,” he said. “Customers are telling us that’s what they want.”

Hilowitz said Chicago — with its East-Coast-meets-the-Midwest feel — is a good market to continue working on the new design.

When the chain was just starting out, Chicago also was the second market to have Starbucks stores, after Seattle.
