Taco Bell Looks to ‘Reinvent the Taco’
Tuesday, October 11th, 2011Taco Bell is testing a new taco featuring a shell made from nacho cheese-flavored Doritos, a product that is quickly becoming a media star as the chain’s parent company hints of plans to “reinvent the taco” next year.

In a third-quarter call to analysts this week, Yum! Brands Inc. chairman and chief executive David Novak said the company is focusing efforts on turning around disappointing sales at Taco Bell, the company’s largest and most profitable chain in the United States.
Novak promised “market-tested, category-breakthrough innovation” to re-energize the Taco Bell brand by the end of the first quarter next year.
Company officials were shy to confirm whether the new Doritos Locos Taco is part of that so-called innovation.
“We’re excited about the positive consumer response to Doritos Locos Tacos, which is currently in test markets in Bakersfield, Fresno and Toledo,” said Rob Poetsch, a spokesman for the chain. “It’s highly innovative because it combines two classic favorites that people love. When we know it’s perfect, we’ll bring it to market.”

Firefly Coffee on the Way!!
Saturday, August 20th, 2011With great online reviews from New York to New Mexico, people already know about the Firefly Coffee House at 3523 North Anthony Blvd. So should you. The coffee is as good as it’s ever been, and we’re glad to see their standards haven’t changed in the 12 years they’ve been around — they’re as high as ever. Firefly proudly brews Fort Wayne’s ‘Crazy Sisters’ coffee beans and uses Ghirardelli chocolate and caramel to enhance the already great flavors of coffee.
Favorites include the Zebra Mocha - espresso, Ghirardelli milk or dark chocolate & white chocolate, steamed milk & homemade whipped cream, and the Turtle Latte - espresso, Ghirardelli caramel & chocolate, butter pecan syrup, steamed milk & homemade whipped cream. Also, they’ve introduced 6 new wraps - BLT & Egg Salad, Thai Peanut, Greek, Chipotle Ranch, Crunchy Asian, Cobb Salad - 5 of which can be made into a salad upon request, all of which can be made with grilled chicken or turkey. And for you smoothie fans out there, yup, they’re still using a half pound of fresh frozen fruit, apple juice, and live culture yogurt. We can’t deliver all of their great atmosphere, but call 442-3663 and Firefly Coffee House is at YOUR house.

Saturday, June 25th, 2011It’s a Panda Express promenade.
The Chinese food chain plans to invest more than $1.2 million at two stand-alone restaurants in Fort Wayne.
Construction crews are already busy on a 2,448-square-foot eatery in front of Kohl’s at Apple Glen Crossing and a carbon copy is slated to rise on Lima Road in front of Home Depot, although the timetable for that location is not known, according to Allen County records.
Quiznos Debuts New Menu
Friday, June 17th, 2011The new Southern BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich features slow-roasted shredded pork, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, pickles, yellow mustard and smoky barbecue sauce. It is available for a limited time at the promotional price of $5 for a large sandwich.
Following the promotion, the sandwich will appear on Quiznos’ signature menu at a recommended $7.99 for a large.
The additional new sandwich, the Cuban Pork, tops slow-roasted and shredded pork with sliced ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, yellow mustard and mayonnaise for a recommended $7.99 for a large.
Zack Calkins, Quiznos’ senior vice president of culinary creation, said in a statement that he developed the sandwiches after tasting trips to Chicago, San Francisco and the South.
“Pulled pork has been rising in popularity recently and this trend represented an opportunity to further expand our chef-inspired menu offerings,” he said. “We’ve been developing these flavors over the past four months and they are definitely ready for prime time.”
The Farmers Market salads, available on a limited-time basis, borrow elements from the fine dining world. A Harvest Chicken Salad, for example, includes honey dijon chicken, pumpkin seeds, grapes, apples, dried cranberries, cucumbers, tomatoes and acai vinaigrette.

The new Caprese Chicken Salad features chicken with fresh mozzarella pearls marinated in basil pesto dressing. The salads are priced at a recommended $3.19 for a small and $5.99 for a regular.
Besides growing its menu offerings, the more than 3,500-unit chain is continuing a strategy launched last year that focuses on convenience store expansion. It currently has nearly 200 outlets in C-store locations, mostly independent or small regional chains.
The Hess partnership is Quiznos’ largest so far, and company officials said it marks a significant milestone toward the company’s goal of becoming the premier quick-service partner in the C-store market.
Quiznos has tested nine outlets in Hess stores in the Tampa area this year. Based on the success of those tests, Hess now plans to expand the relationship to add more than 40 additional Quiznos units in Tampa stores by the end of the year.
“The combination of Quiznos’ brand recognition, unique toasted flavors and excellent operating platform gives Hess customers exactly what they are looking for,” said Rick Lawlor, Hess’s vice president of retail sales and marketing, in a statement. “The Florida test proved that Quiznos is a solid partner that can attract new traffic into our stores.”
New York-based Hess, which operates about 1,350 locations along the East Coast, is also testing Quiznos outlets in New Jersey, according to a Quiznos spokeswoman. Hess officials are also considering adding the sandwich shops in Miami and Orlando.
Although offering a limited menu, Quiznos’ Hess outlets will feature signature sandwiches and hot breakfast items, as well as grab-and-go options. The new menu items rolled out Monday are available at participating locations nationwide.
