About Fish of Stroh:
The origins of Gropp’s Famous Fish of Stroh go back to 1956 when Elvin and Millie Gropp decided to sell their family farm and open a tavern in Stroh, Indiana. To bring new customers to the tavern, the Gropp’s decided to begin serving food. Millie began to perfect a “secret” breading mix for fish to appeal to the surrounding lake communities. The fish recipe became such a success that people came from miles around to enjoy Gropp’s Famous Fish. The Gropp’s developed their ‘Famous’ tartar sauce, coleslaw and original home-style recipes that became favorites of Fish of Stroh fans.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Fish of Stroh grew by franchising locations in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. As the years passed and the various franchises expired, the Gropp family chose to exit the franchising business. The last Famous Fish of Stroh restaurant in Fort Wayne closed in October 2003.
In December 2004, a Fort Wayne based company, FRANDS Group, LLC purchased all rights and recipes related to Gropp’s Famous Fish of Stroh. The new owners worked closely with Millie Gropp and her family to re-launch the legendary Fish of Stroh restaurants in March of 2005 with their first new location, at the Pine Valley Shopping Center in Fort Wayne. Mark Gropp, Millie’s son, assisted the new owners during the initial startup and operations of the Pine Valley location.
The new restaurant features the casual and friendly atmosphere of Northeast Indiana’s Lake Country. The ‘Stroh Lake Bait and Tackle’ dining room is available for parties, meetings and special occasions.
